What is Design?
Design is what helps art ideas become a reality. Design and art go hand-in-hand no matter what the outcome may be. My ideas for a new design may even be inspired by others that I’d come across for motivation. I would like to believe that without having a design concept in mind, art would be much more challenging to create for any purpose. Even if it starts as a rough concept in the beginning with little details, more can always be added to it or be taken away to improve it at a later time.
Sometimes design isn’t what’s normally considered right away when thinking of new art but more of how the art could be presented after its initial design has been made. So a design concept may be seen as an afterthought but it actually ties in with art the same time it’s being created. All the lines and details I make for my art make a design that I bring to life, not just the art or design alone.
Many of my current designs were influenced by cartoons so I would imitate the designs I’d see until I began making my own. It’s not as easy to make something that hasn't already been seen in another design and that could feel discouraging at first, but practically every design that exists now was and still may continue to be influenced from a previous design. I’d say that adding a personal twist to a design can also help it stand out and feel more original especially if the art will be viewed by anyone other than the artist.
I may not always have an immediate design in my head but whatever ideas I had I would jot down so that maybe I could form a design at a different time. If enough time and effort is put into the first design draft however, it can eventually become something permanent to work with. Sometimes the first design concept might not stick after all that’s been possibly added or taken away from it so I can discard it and start fresh or go back to what formulated the original design concept and see what changes can be made until I’m satisfied.
In conclusion, I feel that design is essential to the creation of art but both topics are equally important for the results they produce. Designs can also be influenced by others and have their own spin to them to keep them unique. Even a design concept can always be changed to suit the artist’s best interests and don’t have to go with the first thing that comes to mind.
