What is Craft?

Craft would be what I would consider the main foundation for art and design. Being able to craft something on the spot isn’t as simple as it sounds so it would not only require the right tools and essentials to make a project real but to also have a general understanding of how the craft works and have the best outcome possible. The ability to craft isn’t just limited to art and design however and is considered a necessary skill for many things created and used everywhere in the world today.

While I think art and design need each other to coexist, both of them together equally depend on craft to even be made in the first place. Having an idea for an artwork or design is the easy part, but how to craft it can be a thinker. I’d say it’s good to have some knowledge on the intended crafting method that would normally be used but experimenting with a new craft can also provide new techniques to use for future purposes.

It’s easy to assume that being artistic comes naturally once learning the basics but it takes time and patience just like understanding a craft would. Even though I’ve been drawing for many years, I had to practice to get where I’m at today. No one is an expert right away on a craft they’re passionate about but anyone who’s skilled at a certain craft went through the same process of learning through trial and error until they got the hang of it.

Although it may not be acknowledged most of the time, people craft various things all the time whether it’s meant to be temporary like making food for family or permanent such as designing architecture for a company. I will admit that when I would think of anything being crafted, it was meant to last forever but over time, I realized it isn't but that doesn’t devalue what was crafted any less. Some may limit themselves from trying a certain craft or going further with it for whatever reason that might be but I feel that anyone is able to craft anything they put their minds to not just with practice and knowledge but also the motivation to keep pursuing it.

In conclusion, craft is what makes art and design possible for artists like myself. It may take some time to learn and create a specific craft but what matters most is how much time is spent to produce the best product possible. Lastly, crafting isn’t just for art and design alone and can be done by anyone for anything they set their interests to even if it’s meant to last for a long or short period of time.
