What is Art?

Art can serve as a form of self-expression for gathering ideas into a more creative and productive outlet. It was something that kept me occupied during my free time and helped me relax if I dealt with something stressful or upsetting beforehand. Art may also be used for other personal reasons that aren’t just centered around the individual such as making a statement or for the purpose of creativity.

In terms of self-expression, I felt that a majority of the art I created not only helped me figure out what I wanted to do in life but present who I was and what I enjoyed without having to say it out loud or keep it concealed from others. I’d like to think the saying of “actions speak louder than words” can apply to this as making art can convey what an individual may feel or want to show about themselves and perhaps have others take a view from their perspective for a brief moment without words. Though it’s not for everyone, I see it as a healthy alternative for those unsure of how to express themselves properly through a form of visual representation.

Art also helped demonstrate how I was currently feeling and kept me busy as I was making it. As previously mentioned of using art for self-expression, I would sometimes make art based on what emotion I was feeling that day or before then. This kind of art would not necessarily convey who an artist is overall but sometimes emotions play a role for the purpose of the artwork and may cause the audience to react with it.

I see art having no limitations to where it’s presented, how it’s made, and the purpose for its overall creation which I think is the most unique concept of art as a whole. Many powerful movements and protests for example use art or specific designs to show what they stand for and to grab the attention of others in hope of their support. For me, it’s mostly personal and individual creativity that motivates my art which may not have as big of an impact compared to other uses for art but still just as very important to me and my intentions behind it.

In conclusion, art has helped me discover myself and how I wanted to present that through a form of visual media. It’s something I can see being used for many other artists out there who may depend on art for comfort and stability. Even what an artist is feeling emotionally can also leave a major effect on their art when presented to the world. Furthermore, art can be used for any purpose without restrictions as a way to break boundaries in order to make personal and public statements or for creativity's sake.
